MUSCULOSKELETAL HEALTH
Your bones and muscles support and transport you. Their complex mechanics allow you to perform everyday gestures. Whether working, playing with children, cooking or playing sports, all of this is made possible thanks to your musculoskeletal system. But for many people, moving can be difficult or painful. There are many causes for that. Diseases, injuries, age, deformities, degenerative conditions, etc. This is where orthopedics comes in.
Orthopedic surgery is a surgical specialization that deals with conditions of muscles, bones, cartilage and tendons. An orthopedic surgeon is skilled in repairing and even reconstructing these often debilitating and painful defects. At Lacroix Private Medicine, we are fortunate to have several experienced orthopedic surgeons on our teams: Dr. Virginie Gauvreau, Dr. François Morin, Dr. Philippe Dahan, Dr. Richard Lirette, Dr. Jean-Thomas Leclerc, Dr. Michèle Angers, Dr. Bassam Zahra and Dr. Jimmy Nguyen.
Note that no medical referral is necessary to have an orthopedic surgery consultation with our specialist doctors.

“It is with great pride that we announce that our operating rooms in Laval and Quebec City have obtained accreditation with distinction from Accreditation Canada, with an exceptional result of 97.3%. This distinction is a recognition of the quality of our practices, our commitment to our patients and our determination to provide safe and exemplary care. For a very first accreditation, this result is simply remarkable. It reflects the collective work of our entire organization and marks an important milestone in our journey. We are continuing on this great momentum and aiming even higher to strengthen our position as a benchmark in quality and safety of care.”
Maripier Bélisle, Operating Rooms Director
Dr. François Morin specialized in orthopedic surgery at Laval University from 1982 to 1986. He then specialized in hip and knee reconstruction surgery in Toronto in 1987. Since that time, he has been practicing at CHUL (Quebec City) and continued to develop his interest and passion for hip and knee pathologies. He has been in practice at the CIUSS-Université Laval since its founding.
Dr. Morin performs arthroscopy for meniscal tear and reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament by patellar tendon. He also practices hip resurfacing, for athletes who can return to their sport, often without restrictions, as well as the placement of hip prosthesis by direct anterior approach which allows recovery and a rapid return to activity. He also performs the fitting of knee prostheses which preserve the normal movement of the knee and allow in the majority of cases a return to sports activity.
He will be happy to meet you at our Center Berger clinic.
We are very proud to present the team that assisted Dr. François Morin, orthopedic surgeon at Lacroix, who performed the very first hip replacement surgery on April 3, 2023, in our operating room at the Berger Medical Center in Quebec. Thanks to a revolutionary new surgical technique using an anterior approach, Dr. Morin can perform this operation in one-day surgery mode. The operation was a great success and our patient returned home very happy, with a brand new hip that will allow him to resume his normal activities in the coming months.

A rotator cuff tear is an injury that affects the tendons of the muscles located in the shoulder and used to initiate movement. It can occur either through wear and tear of the tendons due to repetitive daily actions, or following trauma.
Here is some information about the symptoms, causes and treatments of this condition.
Pain accompanied by an inability to raise the arm straight away are often the first symptoms. The shoulder can be painful with cracking during mobilization but it maintains a certain mobility without force. In some cases, the shoulder may have lost a lot of its mobility (pseudo-paralytic) and remain painful. It is important to consult quickly if a rotator cuff tear is suspected.
Rotator cuff tear can be of traumatic origin, mainly in young people, following an accident (for example, a fall from a bicycle, skiing or lifting effort. In older people, it can result from wear of the tendons of the cuff due to repetitive daily movements (for example in drywall masons, farmers, cashiers or caregivers.) Around 55-60 years of age, these people whose tendons are worn can see their tendons rupture following a trivial action, such as pulling or carrying something heavy.
For a partial rotator cuff tear or in an elderly patient, medical treatment may be preferred. It may include analgesics, rest, physiotherapy rehabilitation and infiltrations. When the lesions are disabling and operable, surgical treatment is considered. Post-operative rehabilitation is essential to restore shoulder mobility and strength. It is crucial to consult a healthcare professional to assess the severity of the rotator cuff tear and determine the appropriate treatment. Each case is unique and treatment will be adapted according to the individual situation.

A consultation is required before planning a surgical procedure in the operating room.
For the safety of our patients and to prevent the risk of hospitalization as much as possible, we must respect several criteria. First of all, the surgical procedure must be adapted to day surgery. The other two criteria to be met are a BMI (body mass index) less than or equal to 35.0 and an ASA score 1 or 2 maximum).
