What is an internist?
Internal medicine is a medical specialty. Rather than focusing on a single organ or group of organs (system), it focuses on the internal organs as a whole. When a disease or condition affects several different systems simultaneously and the diagnosis would require several different specialists, an internist is the doctor to consult. This is why it is often referred to as the specialty for complex or rare cases. Thus, this type of physician may be called upon to diagnose autoimmune or systemic conditions, rare diseases, genetic diseases of all kinds, immunosuppression, polypathologies (increasingly common as we age), etc.
